West Country Cruise

August 11, 2025 - August 22, 2025

£5

This cruise can start with the Portland Weekend and then on to venues that will be organised by the participating members nearer the time. This is a change from the usual way we do cruises to allow more flexibility for longer distance cruising members to adjust their venue choices to suit the conditions and weather without having a restricting itinery.

Possible venues could be:

Torquay, where there are many shops, restaurants and interesting places within easy walking distance. You also have the harbour area with lots of galleries, eateries and interesting places too. In the past we have booked a meal at the Torquay Yacht Club just up the hill from the harbour oposite the Living Coasts Aviary. At the Aviary you can walk around the penguin area looking at the different species. They were happy in their habitats. They are in a very large kind of enclosure where they are free to go wherever they want. A few walk among the visitors. There were other types of birds at this attraction which were free to fly around. There were also otters, seals, fish, sea horses and bugs to look at. Confirmed booked dates:

Plymouth, berthing in the Queen Anne Battery Marina under Plymouth Hoe, where there is the Waypoint Bar and Bistro on site with a good menu if you dont fancy wandering off too far on your first evening. The Barbican is only a short walk from the marina with all it’s marvellous shops, eateries and galleries if you fancy a walk after the sail down from Brixham. The Royal Western Yacht Club is right next door, and the Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club is a short walk across Sutton Harbour Lock, so you will be really spoilt for places to eat.  The city is within walking distance of the marina, and there’s the The National Marine Aquarium just outside the marina on the edge of Sutton Harbour. There is also some amazing historical and modern places to visit, so you won’t be bored with this venue. Confirmed booked dates:

Dartmouth, This beautiful town of Dartmouth situated on the mouth of the River Dart is one of South Devon’s most popular and enchanting towns. With its charming historic streets, scenic river location and surrounded by South Devon countryside you have to go a long way to find a town as pretty.

Things to Do in Dartmouth

The beauty of the landscape, the historical buildings, and the exceptional local produce all make Dartmouth the perfect holiday destination.

Brixham,  isn’t just about fishing. It’s still one of the busiest fishing ports in the UK and a working town, but it’s also a place where you can discover a range of arts and culture, excellent local food and some unique attractions. Brixham attracts visitors for its character, charm and combination of tradition and an enthusiasm for contemporary styles.  If you like art, you’ll love Brixham. The town has a great range of art galleries featuring local and visiting artists. You can visit the artists’ corner on the Strand to see artists working, if the weather permits. Brixham museum is packed with interesting exhibits from the town’s cultural and maritime heritage.

Falmouth, Falmouth is famous for its harbour. Together with Carrick Roads, it forms the third deepest natural harbour in the world, and the deepest in Western Europe. It has been the start or finish point of various round-the-world record-breaking voyages, such as those of Robin Knox-Johnston and Dame Ellen MacArthur.

Salcombe, The beautiful coastal town of Salcombe sits on the banks of the Kingsbridge Estuary making it one of the prettiest towns in South Devon. Located within the South Devon Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty, Salcombe is known for its outstanding coastal views and rolling surrounding countryside, as well as a centre for sailing. Salcombe is a great base for holiday spent messing about on the water or at the water’s edge, or just for a day trip – either way you will fall in love with this beautiful town.
